New Zealand Certificates in English Language (NZCEL)

Foundation Level 1 (Beginner)

For an introduction to English for absolute beginners, to help start communicating about day-to-day activities and social events.

Level 1 (Elementary)

For an introduction to, and to build confidence in basic, everyday English to help with family, school, and social events.  

Level 2 (Pre-Intermediate)

To help begin developing general, everyday English to help with family, school, jobs and social events.

Level 3 (Intermediate)

Listen to texts about everyday life situations, deliver oral presentations about yourself, and write informative texts about yourself.   

Choose to study just one of the three Level 3 qualifiers 

Level 3 Applied General

Listen and understand complex spoken texts and narratives on familiar topics, deliver an oral presentation on an everyday life context, participate in semi-formal transactions for everyday life, read and understand narrative and informative texts independently, write narrative texts, formal e-mails about a product or a service, compare and contrast specific topics.

Level 3 Applied Academic

Listen and understand spoken texts on academic and informative topics in academic contexts, deliver a formal oral presentation and participate in spoken interactions expressing an opinion in an academic context, read and understand complex informative and narrative texts including research academic articles, and write summaries, film or book reviews, informative essays and researched texts for academic purposes. 

Level 3 Applied Employment

Listen and understand spoken texts in different workplace contexts on informative topics, deliver a formal presentation in a workplace context, participate in spoken transactions for routine and practical workplace communication, read and understand informative and narrative texts related to employment issues for practical purposes, write formal emails, descriptive texts on a workplace related topic and discursive texts on workplace topics presenting a balanced view of both sides.

You may choose to study all three of the Level 4 qualifiers (one per semester) and they may be studied in any order of preference  

Level 4 General

Listen and understand spoken texts from everyday social and community contexts on familiar or unfamiliar topics, deliver an oral presentation and participate in spoken interactions responding to a current topic on everyday life situations, read and process information from everyday social and community contexts, narrative texts and complex articles; write texts expressing view points, including a research article about a topic of interest.

Level 4 Academic

Listen and understand spoken texts on familiar or unfamiliar topics relevant to academic purposes, deliver a formal oral presentation and participate in spoken interactions expressing an opinion in an academic context, read independently to obtain information from informative, narrative, and discursive texts including complex research articles, write texts expressing a viewpoint and researched texts for academic purposes.

Level 4 Employment

Listen and understand spoken texts from workplace contexts on familiar and unfamiliar topics, deliver an oral presentation on a workplace related topic, participate in spoken interactions responding to a workplace scenario in a staff meeting, read and process information from workplace related texts, narrative texts, and complex articles about workplace issues, write formal transactional emails about workplace matters on a given topic, a report interpreting visuals, and a research article about work related topics. 

Level 5 Academic 

Listen and understand spoken texts including complex multi-person discussions on concrete or abstract topics for academic purposes; participate in a collaborative group discussion, argue a point of view in a debate, and deliver a persuasive oral presentation; read and process information from a research article or a complex newspaper article on an unfamiliar topic; write essays for academic purposes and extended, crafted texts using researched materials for academic purposes.
